What made you decide to start Aikido?

Because my brothers and sisters were learning

Were you worried about anything when you started?

I was worried that I might get hurt.

What has changed through Aikido?

My sword fighting became much stronger.

What is interesting about Aikido?

Really, it is playing with soft swords.

What are the recommended points of our dojo?

You can get stronger!

To parents of elementary school students

Are you looking for a place that will:

  1. Value, recognize, praise, encourage and motivate your child to achieve their full potential?

  2. Improve your child's concentration, judgment, and achievement?

  3. Help your child to naturally improve their communication skills, etiquette and international mindset?

As a young child, Yoshie Sugai Sensei, the head instructor and founder of Chiseikan was often bullied by other children because she was often sick and couldn't go to school regularly until she was in high school. She had a gentle personality and liked to read books quietly.

However, through studying abroad and traveling to more than 20 countries, she realized the importance of physical and mental strength, specifically to ① Be confident in yourself and express your opinion clearly. ② Train your body. ③ No matter what, try your best. She learned that by doing these three things, the possibilities of life will expand. Furthermore, the martial arts I met in my late twenties greatly expanded my world.

At Chiseikan, we help children develop their individual abilities, cultivate flexible and strong bodies and minds, understand proper social etiquette, and improve not only their martial arts skills but also many other life skills that do not hinge on victory or defeat. Children can also gain aspirations, concentration, and a sense of accomplishment by studying the skills and knowledge required to promote to a higher belt level.  They will also be able to acquire communication skills and an international mindset by practicing in English and Japanese with people of many different ages (elementary school to adults) and nationalities.

Would you like to expand your child's potential at Chiseikan?

Three points for "peace of mind" at Chiseikan:

  1. Children's entry / exit reports will be sent to parents using a dedicated smartphone app.

  2. You can pay monthly fees and contact our teachers directly through our dedicated smartphone app.

  3. Our Dojo has windows on all sides and is very well ventilated. We also limit class sizes to 10 students per class.  Before practicing, everyone must wash their hands and have their temperature taken, and do our best to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Karate Practice

To junior high and high school students

Do any of these apply to you?

"I want to be able to express my opinion more clearly".

"I want to do something that makes me shine."

"I want to interact with different kinds of people outside of school."

"I want to be able to do something unique"

When most people think about the martial arts, they often think that they have to be strong to start practicing. But at Chiseikan, even if you feel weak or weak at first, you will gain confidence and become stronger by practicing different techniques. Jigoro Kano, who created judo, was actually very small and weak at first, and Yoshie Sugai-sensei can apply martial arts techniques to people over 190cm tall, even though she is only 152cm. Because we have no competitions in Aikido, you will never have to compare your strength to anyone else's, so you can focus exclusively on your own improvement. And by practicing with people of different ages, genders and nationalities, your world can expand even further.

Would you like to try something new?

Message To Women

1. Do you want to improve yourself to be stronger and more beautiful?

2. Do you want to unlock your hidden potential?

3. Do you want to be a teacher for the rest of your life?

You've finally reached that time in your life where your children can take care of themselves, and you can focus on your own work.  And you've started to have that feeling that "It's time to start something new!" Now that you're here, would you like to begin something new and can add value to the rest of your life?

Chiseikan's founder, Yoshie Sugai is her 50s and is the mother of two boys. She is actually quite short and many people have said to her "it's very hard to imagine you're a martial arts Sensei." Actually though, she has been practicing martial arts for more than 20 years, and the years have passed since I was doing martial arts. The reason why she has been able to continue her practice for so long while also playing the three roles of wife, mother, and daughter is that she can enjoy practicing with friends who have the same purpose, but different occupations, genders, ages, and nationalities, while laughing and having fun. It was actually because of this that she could strengthen her mind and body even in the most stressful times. Rather than getting more tired from teaching, she get energized she sees the strong motivation of her students to learn.

If you attend practice twice a week, you will be able to obtain your black belt in about two years where you can become a teaching assistant for children's and beginner classes.

Why don't you polish your abilities and feel energized at Chiseikan?

Message to MEn

1. Do you want to strengthen your mind and body?

2. Do you want to have a fun way to relieve stress?

3. Do you want to have a hobby that will last a lifetime?

If you're someone who thinks "I'm always busy with work. I have to do my best for my family. Even if I take a rest, I can't get rid of my tiredness, and I feel stress in my mind and body. I want to try something new, but I can't get started," why not start learning martial arts in at Chiseikan?

You will be able to see yourself differently than when you are at work or at home. By laughing with friends from different occupations, genders, ages, and nationalities, and practicing martial arts together with them, while having fun and getting stronger at the same time, you will be able to unlock new possibilities for your future.

By practicing martial arts, you can adjust the core balance of your body, and improve muscle strength by learning how to respond to attacks and apply different techniques. Our style of martial arts, is not about competing against other people, but is instead about improving your own level and capabilities. In our dojo here in Kyoto, you can experience a sense of accomplishment every time you promote to a higher belt level, and the joy of enhancing your skills while cooperating with friends who are working to achieve the same. The main focus of our martial arts practices is Aikido, which requires us to adjust techniques based on each individual, so you can continue to practice with us throughout the course of your lifetime.

We look forward to having you join us at Chiseikan!

What made you decide to start Aikido?

I had a vague image that it was cool. I was relieved that Yoshie-sensei was so nice.
Aikido doesn't have violent movements, and it seemed like I could keep practicing for a long time.

What were you worried about when you started?

What kind of members are there to practice with? What if it's really tough (laughs)

What has changed through Aikido?

I've started to apply the philosophy of Aikido that the teacher talks about in practice to my daily life.

What is interesting about Aikido?

By learning the techniques, you can feel the level up of not only yourself but also your fellow practitioners.

What are the recommended points of the dojo?

The teachers are very supportive and people from various nationalities practice here together.

Please note: there is no bicycle parking or parking lot at Chiseikan dojo. As a general rule, please park at a nearby public parking facility near the dojo. Chiseikan will not be liable if you are parked in the adjacent coin laundry, nearby bicycle or auto parking lot without permission.
